The Anti-Racism & Cultural Diversity Office offers professional development courses to increase faculty and staff’s understanding of their roles/responsibilities and key strategies to advancing racial equity, diversity and inclusion at U of T. In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all training sessions will be offered virtually.

Understanding and Addressing Anti-Semitism
Facilitated by: Shari Golberg, Ph.D., Team Lead, Apprenticeship Branch, Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development

The following workshop will explore the roots of anti-Semitism, its relationship with other interlocking forms of oppression, and how to identify and address it in postsecondary contexts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide an overview of what anti-Semitism is and its many manifestations, both historical and current;
  • Increase understanding of how anti-Semitism relates to other forms of oppression; and
  • Share strategies and resources to help identify and address anti-Semitism in postsecondary environments.

  • Explain the role of the Antiracism and Cultural Diversity Office in the complaints resolution process at the University of Toronto.

B What is Harassment? Tools to identifying and addressing racial and sexual harassment in the work environment

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide an overview of key race-related and sexual harassment terms and definitions outlined within the Ontario Human Right Code.
  • Identify manifestations of racial and sexual harassment and their impact on the individual and the work environment.
  • Explain institutional processes and the role of the Anti-Racism & Cultural Diversity Office and the Sexual Violence Prevention and Support Centre in responding to instances of racial and sexual harassment.

Please Note: In support of the University’s action to implement the recommendations of the University of Toronto Anti-Black Racism Task Force Report, ARCDO is in the process of developing Anti-Black Racism (ABR) online modules, that are attuned and accessible to faculty, staff, and students. Accordingly, there will not be any ABR trainings this Fall.

Due to the recent staffing transition within the Anti-Racism & Cultural Diversity Office, we unfortunately have to move forward with the rescheduling of the Anti-Black Racism (ABR) training modules. D Anti-Black Racism Training (Module 1)
Understanding Anti-Black Racism: The Foundation**

In this introductory session, participants will:

  • Engage in discussion and information-sharing on the historical context of race and racism in Canada and its present day impacts on the Black community;
  • Discuss and learn about the fluidity of anti-Black racism within systemic and institutional structures;
  • Explore the interconnectedness of social identities, privilege and whiteness; and
  • Reflect on their personal journey with locating one’s self in the discourse of racism and anti-racism work.

E Anti-Black Racism Training (Module 2) *
Going Deeper in Addressing Anti-Black Racism: Understanding Whiteness, Internalized Racism and Debunking Myths**

In this session, participants will:

  • Engage in dialogue on the concepts of eurocentrism, whiteness and white supremacy, to increase understanding of how these concepts manifest in organizations and contribute to anti-Black racism;
  • Define and discuss the implications of internalized racism;
  • Deepen understanding of the myths of meritocracy, reverse racism and racial invisibility and how they manifest in our work and learning environments; and
  • Reflect on their personal journey and identify daily concrete actions that can be taken to engage in anti-racist behavior.

F Anti-Black Racism Training (Module 3) *
Anti-Black Racism & Tools for Organizational Change**

In this session, participants will:

  • Identify and define organizational bias and systemic barriers that impact Black community from entering and/or feeling included within organizations;
  • Explore practices can help break the cycle of anti-black racism and create a more inclusive work environment;
  • Discuss the principles and tools required to establish an anti-racism strategy within their environments; and
  • Reflect and commit to practices that will evolve their organizational culture into being spaces of racial inclusion for Black and racialized communities.
