Dismantling Anti-Black Racism in Post-Secondary Environments Part 2
Facilitated by: Dr. Joseph Smith, Educator, Community Worker and Researcher

In our first seminar we unpacked the weighted history of racialization and its various
problematic permutations within our modern society. We explored how these
permutations left us fragile, fearful, and overburdened with the great challenge of
rendering spaces more inclusive for diverse equity seeking groups. In this seminar,
through openly confronting our power, privilege, and biases, we will be invited to
consider, work through, and simulate what it might mean to show up as an ally for
equity seeking individuals and groups in even more innovative, thought-provoking, and
unique ways. By cultivating an assets-based and emotionally safe environment within
which to learn, we will explore how we can all show up in principled and progressive
ways for equity seeking groups by optimizing our diverse skillsets, abilities, and
personality types.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss and learn about the historical context of racism and its present day impacts for Black community in Canada;
  • Understand and discuss the fluidity of anti-Black racism and its manifestations (within systems, institutions and individual experiences);
  • Identify and unpack organizational and systemic barriers that can impact Black community from being included in post-secondary environments;
  • Share strategies and tools to break the cycle of anti-Black racism and create more inclusive working and learning environments.
