What’s New for August 2013

August 9th is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples!

In 1994, the United Nations declared August 9th the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Subcommission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

August 23rd is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition!

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples. The night of 22 to 23 August 1791, in Santo Domingo (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic) saw the beginning of the uprising that would play a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.


COMMUNITY-WIDE CULTURAL EVENTS

Aug 9th – 11th, Harbourfront Centre: Fortune Cooking. Explore a world of Pan Asian sights sounds and flavours!

Aug 9th – 11th, Danforth Ave (from Broadview to Jones): Pilaros Taste of the Danforth. This is one of Toronto’s signature events, showcasing the best of Hellenic food, culture, and music our multicultural city has to offer – from souvlaki to mezes, authentic Green music to interactive children’s games!

Aug 16th – Aug 18th, Habourfront CentreMABUHAY! Philippines Festival. One of the largest celebrations of Philippine heritage and culture in Canada. Enjoy colourful parades, traditional and contemporary entertainment, world-renowned fashion and authentic culinary delights. This event is co-produced with the Philippine Independence Day Council.

Aug 23rd – 25th, Harbourfront Centre: TELUS Taiwanfest. Featuring tantalizing cooking demonstrations and musical performances by some of the top acts in Taiwan and much more. This year’s theme is “Children of the Ocean.”
